Structure of the carnivorous mammal community in Catalonia

Catalonia (Iberian Peninsula, NE), with a high environmental gradient, provides an interesting opportunity to study how carnivorous mammal communities are structured. This community is made up of 14 species. Carnivores have an important role in ecosystems, affecting their function, structure and dynamics. Obtaining reliable data on carnivorous mammal communities is essential in order to enrich the information taken into account in decision-making processes.

The composition of the carnivorous mammal community in Catalonia is organized according to environmental variables (land cover, land use and topographical or climatic factors). Taking that into consideration, four monitoring methods have been tested in three biogeographical areas of Catalonia and across the land, comparing the number of observations and species that every method can detect.
