River systems have a wide range of habitats. Our focus was on Mediterranean rivers shaped by seasonality, with a highly variable river regime. The greatest majority consist of extremely degraded ecosystems, with a major anthropic influence, affected by infrastructures altering the natural course of the river, overfishing and the introduction of exotic species, among others. Fish are biological indicators, as they show the quality state of aquatic systems, and, therefore, their conditions in a specific environment (composition, abundance and age structure) are indicative of its ecological state. The three river basins on which I focus my research are those of the Tordera, the Besòs and the Ebro.
