Mastering sea movement in photography: Technical and artistic techniques

Coastal photography stands as one of the most demanding disciplines within the realm of landscape photography, requiring hours of dedication to achieve the desired shot. Every detail matters; everything is crucial to achieving the desired final result, from selecting the day and time to choosing the perfect location.

How to approach this type of photography technically and artistically?

For this capture, I have opted to use a wide-angle lens. Thanks to its broad framing, I can achieve a general photo reflecting much environmental information. An ISO sensitivity of 100 also provides excellent image quality, although this requires a higher shutter speed for proper exposure. These settings will allow me to capture how the seawater caresses the rocks, increasing dynamism and reinforcing the sensation of the waves approaching slowly beneath my feet.

The parameters of the photograph are as follows: ISO 100; f/9; 2 seconds; 7-14 mm lens; mirrorless camera; tripod.

I have chosen a closed aperture (f/9) to increase the depth of field and focused surface area, requiring a slower shutter speed. The focal point is at the center of the image, creating a perspective that highlights the lines of the coastal rocks.

Keeping the horizon straight is fundamental, and using photographic filters allows us to highlight the colors of the stormy sky. Polarizing, neutral density, and graduated filters help balance the light of the sea and the sky, increasing color saturation and controlling water reflections.

Finally, given that the predominant colors of the photograph are various shades of blue, adjusting the color temperature has allowed me to emphasize the freshness of the maritime landscape.
